Threads, the social media platform that has gained traction as an extension of Instagram, is undergoing a brand transformation. The goal? To establish a unique identity that sets it apart from its parent company, Meta. This is where Studio Nari, a London-based design agency, steps in.
The challenge, as design lead Lauren Davidson puts it, was to create a brand that feels connected to the Meta ecosystem while maintaining its independence. Previously, Threads' wordmark was set in Instagram Sans, a typeface that tied it closely to its namesake. However, Studio Nari saw an opportunity to create something more distinctive and expressive.
"We wanted to build a system, not just a logo," Lauren explains. The new wordmark and logo needed to capture the essence of Threads' core value - immediate conversation and participation. The result? A wordmark that is both angular and sculpted, reflecting a sense of movement and momentum, yet tempered with warmth and human gesture.
The "Trending Chisel" concept, as Nari calls it, is a strategic underpinning that translates cultural immediacy into the brand's visual language. The wordmark and glyph are crafted with a chisel-tip marker, capturing the pressure, contrast, and cuts that make Threads' mark distinctive.
"Those gestures are embedded into the letterforms in a restrained way," Lauren adds, ensuring the brand feels human without becoming overly decorative. This approach is also evident in the @-inspired logo, where Nari focused on the behavior of the glyph rather than its specific forms, creating a subtle echo of conversational flow.
By breaking free from the constraints of Instagram Sans, Threads' new wordmark and logo feel more native to the Meta ecosystem. The bespoke type base gives the brand a distinct voice and editorial authority, reflecting its fast-paced, evolving content and real-world impact.
In my opinion, this brand transformation is a clever move. It allows Threads to establish its own identity while still feeling connected to the larger Meta family. The "Trending Chisel" concept is a brilliant way to capture the essence of cultural immediacy and conversation, and I believe it will help Threads stand out in the crowded social media landscape.
What many people don't realize is that a brand's visual identity can have a profound impact on its perception and success. By investing in a unique and thoughtful design, Threads is setting itself up for long-term growth and recognition. It's a bold move, and I'm excited to see how this new brand identity evolves and resonates with its users.
