California High Schoolers' Human Swastika Act to Face Justice, Principal Says
The formation of a human swastika on a high school football field and the subsequent spread of the imagery online by students will lead to administrative consequences, the school's principal announced. The incident, which occurred last week, was brought to light through an anonymous tip line on Wednesday night, quickly spreading online and sparking an investigation.
In a statement, Principal Beth Silbergeld emphasized the school's commitment to restorative justice, stating, 'The students involved are taking accountability for the harm caused.' The California Department of Education has pledged to offer support during the investigation, unequivocally condemning the use of hate symbols like the swastika on school grounds.
The school, located in San Jose, informed the police, and the matter is being treated as a hate crime. Maya Bronicki, education director of the Bay Area Jewish Coalition Education and Advocacy, expressed shock and outrage, highlighting the intentionality and disturbing nature of the act. San Jose police confirmed their response to the incident, which is under investigation.
State Senator Dave Cortese, representing the community, strongly condemned the display as an act of hate, emphasizing the profound impact on young people and the community. He stated, 'There is no place for anti-Semitism or bigotry in our schools or society.'
While the principal cannot disclose student discipline details, the school is taking deliberate steps to address the harm caused and support healing and learning. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation to address unbiased teaching and establish an antisemitism prevention coordinator within the California Department of Education.
