The Reds' Big Move: Unlocking Michael Toglia's Potential
In a move that has sparked intrigue among baseball enthusiasts, the Reds have signed first baseman Michael Toglia to a minor league deal. This development, as revealed by his MLB transactions log, adds an intriguing chapter to Toglia's journey.
Toglia, a 27-year-old with a promising bat, was recently non-tendered by the Rockies. His 2025 season saw him split time between Triple-A and the majors, but it was his performance in the 2024 campaign that caught the eye of many.
Following the 2024 season, Toglia showcased the potential to be a three-true-outcomes hitter. He blasted 25 home runs in 116 games and demonstrated impressive discipline at the plate, walking at an 11.8% rate. However, his strikeout rate of 32.1% was a concern, resulting in a passable 98 wRC+.
But here's where it gets controversial: Toglia's contact skills took a nosedive at the start of the 2025 season. His strikeout rate soared to 39.1% in the first two months, leading to a demotion. He spent the remainder of the season shuffling between the big league club and the minors.
Drafted by Colorado in the first round back in 2019, Toglia has always shown big power potential in the minors. However, his swing-and-miss tendencies have been a cause for concern. He made his MLB debut in 2022 and played sparingly that year and the next, totaling just six home runs in 76 games.
The 2024 season was a breakthrough, mirroring his minor league success, especially with his ability to draw walks. Before his promotion, Toglia consistently maintained a walk rate of at least 12% in the minors, a skill that eluded him during his initial MLB stints.
Toglia's talent is undeniable when he makes contact. In 2024, he ranked in the 98th percentile for barrel rate and the 94th percentile for hard-hit rate. However, the consistency of his contact has been an issue. His whiff rate has consistently exceeded 33% across all four MLB seasons, and last year, he had the fourth-lowest contact rate among hitters with at least 300 plate appearances.
So, the question remains: Can the Reds unlock Toglia's full potential? Will he become a consistent force at the plate, or will his swing-and-miss tendencies continue to hold him back?
