Ravens Eye Lamar Jackson Extension Before Free Agency (2026)

The Baltimore Ravens are facing a critical decision: How to secure their star quarterback, Lamar Jackson, for the long haul. The team is eager to negotiate a new contract extension with Jackson this offseason, even though he's already under contract through the 2027 season, thanks to a hefty $260 million deal signed before the 2023 season.

But here's where it gets complicated. Without a new agreement, Jackson's current contract structure poses a significant challenge to the Ravens' ability to build a competitive team around him. His salary cap hit is set to skyrocket. According to OvertheCap.com, Jackson's cap hit will jump from $43.5 million last year to a staggering $74.5 million in both 2026 and 2027. This means Jackson's salary could consume up to 24% of the Ravens' projected salary-cap space, severely limiting their ability to sign other key players or pursue free agents.

General Manager Eric DeCosta has acknowledged that extending Jackson's contract would provide much-needed flexibility for roster management. He stated that a new deal would allow the team to be more active in re-signing existing players and potentially target high-value free agents.

Ravens Owner Steve Bisciotti has made it clear that he wants Jackson to remain the team's quarterback. He hopes to structure a new deal similar to the one Jackson signed in 2023, with the annual numbers adjusted. Bisciotti emphasized the urgency of reaching an agreement before free agency begins, as unresolved contract situations can complicate the team's plans. He's communicated his stance to Jackson, expressing a desire to avoid a drawn-out negotiation like the one that occurred previously.

But what if Jackson doesn't want to extend? Bisciotti has a backup plan. The Ravens could restructure Jackson's contract by pushing the $74.5 million owed next season into void years, allowing Jackson to return with the same $43.5 million cap hit he had this season. However, this is not the preferred scenario.

When asked about his long-term future in Baltimore in late December, Jackson responded enthusiastically, expressing his desire to stay with the team. He emphasized his focus on winning games and suggested that contract discussions could be addressed after the season.

And this is the part most people miss: Jackson isn't alone in facing a significant jump in his contract. Other top quarterbacks, such as Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes, are also seeing their cap hits increase substantially. Jackson's projected cap number is the third highest in the league, just behind Watson and Mahomes. Dak Prescott is also in a similar situation, with a cap hit of $74 million.

Controversy & Comment Hooks: What do you think? Should the Ravens prioritize extending Lamar Jackson, even if it means making sacrifices elsewhere? Or is there a better strategy for balancing Jackson's contract with the need to build a complete team? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
