The Philadelphia Phillies have made a significant move by trading Matt Strahm to the Kansas City Royals, effectively shedding some salary from their roster. Strahm, a left-handed reliever who has been a standout performer in the bullpen for the past three seasons, is returning to the team where his professional journey began back in 2016. In exchange, the Phillies will acquire right-hander Jonathan Bowlan, as announced by the organization early Friday morning.
During the 2025 season, Strahm showcased impressive stats, posting a 2.74 ERA over 66 appearances. With an upcoming salary of $7.5 million next season, his departure not only helps the Phillies financially but also raises questions about the depth of their relief pitching. Bowlan, on the other hand, is still in his pre-arbitration phase, making him a cost-effective addition to the team.
Strahm, now 34 years old, joined the Phillies prior to the 2023 season and quickly established himself as one of the most reliable pitchers on the team. Initially utilized as a starter, he transitioned into a high-leverage relief role, demonstrating his versatility. He was particularly effective during the 2023 postseason, where he managed to pitch seven consecutive scoreless innings. However, his performance in the subsequent playoffs was marred by allowing several critical home runs.
Following the Phillies' disappointing exit from this year's National League Division Series, which was partly due to a critical error by pitcher Orion Kerkering, a public spat emerged between Strahm and Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies’ president of baseball operations. Strahm suggested that the pitchers could have benefited from more fielding practice, a remark that Dombrowski contested, pointing out that Strahm had not participated in the fielding sessions leading up to the playoffs.
Despite the controversy, it’s undeniable that Strahm was one of Dombrowski's successful acquisitions in Philadelphia, and his absence will be felt. While the Phillies did sign right-hander Brad Keller to a two-year contract earlier this week, losing Strahm raises concerns about the overall depth of the bullpen. They do have two other left-handed relievers, José Alvarado and Tanner Banks, although Alvarado's season has been hampered by injuries and a suspension.
Bowlan, at 29 years of age, had a respectable 3.86 ERA over 44 and a third innings pitched in 34 games during the 2025 season. He possesses the potential to fill roles as either a long reliever or a middle reliever. It's worth noting that while Bowlan won't hit free agency until 2032, he is currently out of minor-league options, adding to the urgency of his performance with the Phillies.
This trade has allowed the Phillies to save approximately $7 million, yet they still face multiple gaps within their roster. Notably, they are currently without a starting catcher, as J.T. Realmuto is available in free agency. Additionally, the team could benefit from bolstering their pitching staff and acquiring a right-handed hitting outfielder for the bench. The responsibility now lies with the organization to wisely reinvest this saved capital during the offseason to maximize their competitive edge for the 2026 season.
