A Pittsburgh-born astronaut, Mike Fincke, shared his experience of a medical event that led to the early return of NASA's Crew-11 from the International Space Station. Fincke, a Sewickley Academy graduate and NASA astronaut since 1996, revealed that on January 7th, he encountered a medical issue that required immediate attention while in space. His crewmates' swift response and the guidance of NASA flight surgeons helped stabilize his condition.
Fincke praised his crewmates for their professionalism and dedication, which ensured a positive outcome. The medical event, while not an emergency, prompted a carefully coordinated plan to utilize advanced medical imaging not available on the space station. This led to the crew's safe return to Earth on January 15th, off the coast of San Diego, after a five-and-a-half-month mission.
Fincke expressed his gratitude to his fellow Expedition 74 members, the entire NASA team, SpaceX, and the medical professionals at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
