Llandudno residents are unknowingly contributing to the pollution of their beloved beach, a hidden issue that has caused a drop in the bathing water rating. The North Shore coastline, a popular seaside destination, has been affected by a problem that authorities are determined to address: drainage misconnections.
These misconnections occur when wastewater from toilets, sinks, washing machines, or dishwashers is mistakenly connected to surface water drains instead of the foul sewer. While surface water drains are designed to carry rainwater to the sea, untreated wastewater from these misconnections can significantly impact water quality at the beach.
The issue has been particularly prevalent in the Craig y Don area, contributing to the North Shore beach's bathing water classification dropping from Good to Sufficient in 2023. This prompted immediate action from Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and their partners the following year.
The NRW spokesperson emphasizes the importance of tackling these hidden issues, stating, 'Looking after the water quality at Llandudno means tackling issues that aren’t always visible – and that’s exactly what we’ve been working on with our partners.'
Through CCTV surveys of the drainage network, NRW has identified several locations where foul water was entering the surface water system, gaining a clearer understanding of the problem's scope. Since then, NRW teams have been actively inspecting properties, lifting manhole covers, and conducting dye tests to pinpoint misconnections, leaking sewer pipes, or blockages.
So far, around 300 properties out of 986 have been inspected, with 14% showing issues that could allow pollution to reach the outfall and ultimately the sea. The spokesperson reassures residents that these misconnections are often unintentional and may date back many years, emphasizing the importance of local support in identifying and fixing these hidden issues.

Simple actions, such as ensuring correct installation of new appliances and plumbing, can significantly contribute to preserving the coastline.
