J.T. Miller's OT Heroics Lead Rangers to Victory Over Blues | NHL Highlights (2026)

In a thrilling display of skill and leadership, J.T. Miller proved to be the hero for the Rangers in their recent overtime triumph against the Blues.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — You might as well nickname him O.T. Miller!

On Thursday night at Enterprise Center, the Rangers secured a narrow 2-1 victory over the Blues, largely thanks to a remarkable overtime effort from their captain, J.T. Miller. The 32-year-old forward unleashed a powerful shot from the high slot, marking his third goal in overtime this season and bringing his total contributions in extra periods to four points.

“He’s definitely a leader,” said goalie Igor Shesterkin, who made 26 saves during the match. “He has a fantastic personality and plays with intensity every game. We all strive to follow his lead, especially when the game goes into overtime. He’s an essential player for us.”

Miller has borne a significant share of the weight following the Rangers' rocky start to the season. As the 29th captain in the team’s history, it is only natural that he step up in challenging times.

The passionate forward has not merely pointed out the team's shortcomings; he has also taken on a considerable amount of the responsibility himself. This isn’t just about protecting his teammates; Miller sincerely believes that the success of the team partly rests on his shoulders, especially since he feels he hasn’t fully met the high standards he sets for himself.

With a current tally of 21 points (10 goals and 11 assists) in 34 games, it’s clear that Miller's offensive output has not reached the level that the Rangers need from him, particularly in even-strength situations.

However, his impact during overtime has been invaluable for the Rangers’ success.

Beyond his three overtime goals, Miller also assisted Will Cuylle’s game-winning goal in the Rangers’ previous overtime win against Seattle and was responsible for the shootout winner against Columbus.

“It boosts my confidence,” Miller remarked after the game. “I feel like my performance has improved over the last couple of weeks. While I don’t think my game has returned to where it was at the start of the season, I’m not getting the results on the scoreboard that I would like. But I trust that if I continue to play this way consistently throughout the season, good things will come my way. I just have to maintain my confidence.”

In an effort to invigorate the offense, head coach Mike Sullivan brought in rookies Gabe Perreault and Brennan Othmann to join the Rangers’ lower lines.

Despite being limited to just one regulation goal or none for the fourth time in five games, the Rangers managed to fight back, thanks to a gritty power-play goal from Perreault that tied the game at 1-1 in the second period.

Goals have been hard to come by for the Rangers this season, making Perreault’s contribution particularly significant as he scored his first career goal in just his fourth game of the year, and his first since November 15.

With mere seconds left on the power play, Cuylle delivered a perfect pass to Perreault, who redirected it into the net off his skate, equalizing the score.

“I kind of blacked out,” the 20-year-old admitted, reflecting on the moment.

The Blues, playing their second game in as many nights, fell to an unfortunate 0-8 record in overtime and shootouts this season.

Conversely, the Rangers improved their record to 6-4 in those nail-biting situations, with Miller playing a pivotal role in four of those victories.

“That was an incredible shot,” Sullivan commented on Miller’s game-winner. “He has a powerful shot, and there was excellent screen set by Vladislav Gavrikov. The entire play showcased great teamwork. In overtime, it’s crucial to maintain possession and be strategic about when you shoot. I had a talk with Miller earlier today, encouraging him to take more shots because sometimes he hesitates. He possesses a heavy shot that can beat goalies cleanly, and tonight was a perfect example of that.”
