California's Highway 1 Reopens: A Journey Through Big Sur's Iconic Coastline (2026)

For three long years, the breathtaking drive along California's iconic Highway 1 through Big Sur has been a journey interrupted. A relentless series of atmospheric rivers and devastating landslides turned this world-famous coastal route into a challenge, splitting it apart and impacting businesses and communities. But now, there's a reason to celebrate: the highway is fully open again!

It all started in January 2023 when powerful storms triggered a troublesome landslide, effectively closing off sections of the road. Then, a second winter of relentless storms brought two more slides, including one that buried a significant portion of Highway 1 under an astonishing 300,000 cubic yards of debris. And if that wasn't enough, Mother Nature took another bite out of a cliffside lane near the Rocky Creek Bridge.

But finally, after years of challenges, the coastal two-lane highway is completely open for an uninterrupted drive. You can now experience the roughly 100-mile stretch between Carmel and Cambria without detours.

"This vital corridor is the gateway to California’s coast and the lifeblood of the Big Sur economy — and today it’s restored,” stated Governor Gavin Newsom, announcing the reopening. He also thanked the crews who worked tirelessly to complete the extensive repair work, which the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) initially estimated wouldn't be finished until March.

This reopening marks a significant moment for the Big Sur community. Ryne Leuzinger, chair of the board of directors for the Big Sur Community Assn., described the reopening as a reunification of north and south Big Sur and a much-needed boost for local businesses. He even predicted that "2026 will be a really nice time to visit Big Sur."

Despite the challenges, the last stretch of the highway that remained closed was a remote, 6.8-mile section. Officials worked to finalize repairs in this area, known as Regent’s slide, which is part of a particularly steep section of the coastline that faces constant pressure from the ocean and harsh weather.

But here's where it gets controversial... While closures are a recurring feature in Big Sur, this was the longest period in recent history that travel along Highway 1 had been restricted. The impact was significant. Though no communities were entirely cut off, residents faced difficult commutes, and local businesses saw a drastic reduction in customers. Some restaurants estimated a 30% drop in business since early 2023.

Zehya Hay, a supervisor at Nepenthe, a popular restaurant and bar in Big Sur, shared the relief and excitement of the reopening, stating that they were already preparing for a surge in traffic. They are "anticipating our summer to start Jan. 14, 2026.”

Caltrans invested an estimated $162 million in repairs, landslide stabilization, and debris clearing since January 2023. This investment, however, is one that California officials and locals have defended, citing the area's status as a global destination and a vital thoroughfare.

Mike Freed, managing partner of Passport Resorts, which owns the Post Ranch Inn, sees the reopening as a boost for business not only in Big Sur but across the state. Caltrans Director Dina El-Tawansy emphasized the importance of restoring access for residents and tourists, highlighting the economic benefits and the cultural significance of this iconic route.

A recent analysis estimated that the lengthy closure of Highway 1 resulted in more than $438 million in economic losses across the region.

And this is the part most people miss... Despite the celebrations, there's an underlying awareness of the ever-present threat of future closures. Wet weather brings the risk of more rockfalls and landslides. California officials have even tempered the reopening announcement, mentioning the possibility of future temporary or even full closures.

As the world once again plans trips across California's majestic coastline, Hay and others in the community are hoping for the best, ready to face whatever challenges may come.
