The U.S. faces an impending power crunch due to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, and the current energy grid is ill-equipped to handle the demand, according to OKLO CEO Jacob DeWitte. DeWitte, speaking alongside Meta executive Joel Kaplan and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, highlighted the need for new investments in nuclear power to address this issue. The partnership between OKLO and Meta will significantly boost power generation in Pike County, Ohio, with OKLO's plans to develop a 1.2 GW installation near the Hocking Hills.
DeWitte emphasized the benefits of smaller nuclear plants, which can be built and operationalized more quickly, reducing the learning curve and cost of iteration cycles. This approach, he said, will drive technological progress and bring cost-effective, reliable, and abundant energy solutions. Wright and President Donald Trump have played a crucial role in supporting companies like OKLO and Meta, not only by increasing power capacity and addressing structural issues but also by reducing the regulatory burdens faced by private companies.
The CEO warned that the U.S. is at risk of running out of power capacity in the next few years, particularly in critical industrial markets like the Midwest and Northeast. He called for the expansion of the power grid and investment in new installations, such as the Pike site, to alleviate the impending power crunch. DeWitte also addressed the misconception that building data centers will drive up prices, arguing that the U.S. is in an era of abundance, not scarcity.
Meta's commitment to 6.6 GW of new power is seen as a significant step towards meeting the energy demands of the future. DeWitte highlighted the regulatory environment as a major choke point in bringing new energy online, describing it as 'fundamentally anti-energy.' However, he noted that this dynamic is changing, and states with the worst energy policies are now facing challenges and responding accordingly.
OKLO's mission, DeWitte explained, is to harness the power of nuclear fission to deliver reliable and affordable energy, with some of the lowest fuel costs per megawatt-hour. The company is focusing on investing in and building significant generating capacity in areas with development opportunities, bringing manufacturing capabilities back to the country and ensuring the energy needed to support these initiatives.
